Preparing the Way for the Lord
Nothing heralds spring like… potholes. As snow, ice, and road salt finally disappear, we see the damage done by winter. Driving becomes an obstacle course—swing right, swerve left, hit the brakes—until road crews fill the holes and level the roads, paving the way for summer.
As I drive these roads, I can’t help but think of John the Baptist crying out:
“Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming!
Clear the road for him!
The valleys will be filled, and the mountains and hills made level.
The curves will be straightened, and the rough places made smooth.
And then all people will see the salvation sent from God” (Luke 3:4-6).
Although his audience longed to see God’s deliverance, the way was damaged by centuries of disobedience and disillusionment. But when the people asked John how to prepare, his answer was surprisingly practical: give away one of your shirts, share your food, do not cheat or abuse, and be content (Luke 3:10-12).
Today, that message still rings true. If I practice these basic things, I clear my own heart to see God more clearly—and I prepare the way for others to see Christ too. Deep dips of discouragement, cracks from past hurt, and rough stretches of need make it hard for people to respond. But living like Jesus—showing His generosity, honesty, and gentleness—paves the way.
