If You Could Be Anyone in the World...
When my son was eight years old, he was given a simple question on a grade school assignment:
“If you could be anyone else in the world, who would you choose to be, and why?”
When I was his age, I would have had a hard time picking from all my silly “heroes”: Bo & Luke Duke, Evel Knievel, Luke Skywalker, the guy who invented Bubble Yum...
However, David’s answer was anything but immature. He wrote, “I would like to be Grandpa Doc, because he’s in Heaven right now, and he spent his whole life serving God.”
Wow.
The “Grandpa Doc” he refers to is my dad, whose vision for accessible Bible teaching fueled his life and Growing Christians Ministries. And perhaps the most striking part of David’s answer is that he removed earthly goals from the equation altogether.
His vision was to be in Heaven now, having finished the race and kept the faith. No dreams of earthly wealth or stardom. He recognized that living a long, self-serving life on earth is not our ultimate goal as Christians.
Instead, he cherished the rewards in Heaven (2 Timothy 4:7–8) and Paul’s words from 2 Corinthians 5:8, “We would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord.”
Sometimes it takes a child to remind us where our true home is. May we live today in light of eternity.
