High Praises and a Strong Sword

Psalm 149:6 resonates with me: “Let the high praises of God be in their throats and two-edged swords in their hands” (ESV). In my mind’s eye, I see Mel Gibson shouting “Freedom!” as roaring warriors charge into battle in that iconic Braveheart scene.

Scripture shows us again and again that victory follows the voice of praise.  When Judah faced overwhelming odds, King Jehoshaphat sent singers ahead of the army, praising the Lord. As they lifted their voices, God Himself set the ambush (2 Chronicles 20:21–22). The walls of Jericho fell when the people shouted and blew their trumpets (Joshua 6:20). It was when Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns that the prison walls shook and their chains fell off (Acts 16:25–26).

Praise did not wait until the victory was won—it was a means of achieving the victory. Praise as a battle strategy. Worship as warfare.

So we step into another day with high praises on our lips and the double-edged sword of God’s Word in our hands (Hebrews 4:12).  We do not move toward victory, but from a place of victory, praising the One who leads us in triumph (2 Corinthians 2:14).
