Not Down to Zero Yet

In the mid-1970s, my dad left a solid career in engineering to serve the Lord full time.  The ministry offered no guaranteed salary, so he relied on gifts from individuals and churches to make ends meet.

This was a huge step of faith.  And my parents agreed that if their bank account ever reached zero, they would take it as a sign from God that my dad should return to secular employment. 

At one point, their bank account had dwindled to almost nothing. Before leaving for an out-of-state weekend of ministry, Dad told Mom he would type up his résumé when he returned.  

My mom’s response became part of our family history:

“Well, we’re not down to zero yet!”

Dad always credited Mom with having more faith than he did that day.  As he told the story, every time he turned around that weekend, someone was pressing cash into his hand or slipping it into his jacket pocket.  Those people knew nothing about his financial need.  But God did.

What began as a weekend overshadowed by uncertainty ended as an unforgettable demonstration of God’s provision.

Jesus said, “Your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!” (Matthew 6:8)

Sometimes we begin preparing for defeat while God is still writing the story. Today, don’t let what is running low convince you that God has run out.
