Hey Mom, Where’s God’s Office?

Hey Mom, Where’s God’s Office?

When my daughter was a toddler, she once asked me, "Where's God's office?"

Her innocent question made me laugh, but it made sense. I’d been telling her about all the things God does, and in her little mind that meant He must have a workplace.

The first disciples asked a surprisingly similar question. After hearing about Jesus from John the Baptist one day, they began to trail along behind Him. He turned suddenly and asked what they were looking for.

Their reply seems almost laughably simple: "Rabbi... where are you staying?" (John 1:38).  Really? That’s all they could think to say when the Messiah asked what they were seeking?

But it wasn’t such a strange question. In fact, it sprang from the same desire as my daughter’s—a desire to know where God could be found. And beneath it, a deeper longing: "How can I get closer?"

The answer was wonderfully personal. Jesus said, "Come and see" (John 1:39).

Seekers still ask similar questions today. What church do you go to? What’s the website? Is there a podcast? But what they really want is direction to a place where God can be found. They don’t yet know that the answer isn’t in a place, it’s in getting to know a Person.

Jesus still extends the same invitation He gave those first disciples: "Come and see."

That's an invitation we can share as well.
