Grace on Two Wheels

A few years ago, my son bought a motorcycle.  I’m sure all parents can relate when I say my wife and I weren’t thrilled. Our first instinct is to protect our children, and we all know motorcycles and young men aren’t exactly a recipe for caution.

That said, I didn’t have much ground to stand on when it came to arguing his decision.  Why?  Because I had a motorcycle when I was in my 20s.  And I’m sure I made my share of other risky choices back then.

As a father, it’s humbling to see my son walking some of the same roads I once did.  It challenges me to extend grace instead of judgment — to remember where I came from, and to recognize how God’s gentle hand shaped my own journey.

Psalm 103:13–14 says, “The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him. For he knows how weak we are; he remembers we are only dust.”

God isn’t quick to judge. He patiently guides us through lessons that sometimes need to be learned firsthand.

Perhaps one of the hardest parts of loving someone is allowing them to make their own decisions. We can't control every road they take, but we can entrust them to the God who has faithfully carried us through our own journey.
