Life is a Highway: Watch for Debris
It happened in an instant. A chunk of road debris kicked up off the highway and struck the front of my car. When my heart finally returned to my chest, I was able to pull over to inspect the damage.
To my surprise, the car looked perfectly fine. No dents, no cracks, no visible marks at all. But when I got back on my way, the dashboard lit up with warning lights. Beneath the surface, something needed attention.
It turned out a sensor in the bumper had been knocked out of alignment. The car still looked OK, but its ability to detect dangers ahead had been compromised.
Spiritually, we can suffer the same kind of hidden damage. Sin may not announce itself with obvious wreckage. Outwardly, our lives still appear intact, but something inside has shifted dangerously. Our spiritual sensitivities grow dull. Our discernment falters. We may not realize we’re drifting off course.
But here’s the good news: God sees beneath the surface and lovingly alerts us. Not to condemn, but to restore. When we bring our hearts to Him, He is faithful to realign what’s been knocked askew. “The LORD is good … he shows the proper path to those who go astray” (Psalm 25:8). He leads us in paths of righteousness and restores our souls (Psalm 23:3).
Heavenly Father, please search my heart today. Point out anything in me that offends you, recalibrate my heart, and lead me forward in your ways (Psalm 139:23-24).
