The Unflattering Portrait

When my son was in middle school, he drew this hideous picture of me. He meant well, and I’m realistic about my looks, but I’d like to think I’m at least a few steps removed from Shrek.

I can’t remember why he drew it, but I keep it in my photo library because I crack up every time I see it.

But here’s the thing: as inaccurate as that picture is (hopefully), there are days when the picture I carry of myself isn't much better.  I see flaws, weakness, and failures.  I exaggerate what’s wrong and minimize what’s good.  It’s remarkable how distorted our self-perception can get.

Scripture reminds us that while we fixate on the outward and imperfect, God sees us differently.

Ephesians 2:10 tells us, "For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

Where we see inadequacy, God sees potential.  Where we see mistakes, He sees a story of grace.  Where we see an unflattering sketch, He sees a work of art in progress.

Today, remember your true identity isn’t defined by flaws; it's found in the One who calls you His masterpiece.
