The Ichthys Effect

Back in my early 20s, I got my first decent used car from a very generous couple at church.  It ran great and came with something I’d never had before: a little Christian fish emblem on the back.  I quickly realized that symbol affected the way I drove.

I became more aware of my speed and how gracious I was in traffic.  I paid closer attention to the example I was setting for the drivers all around me.  That simple emblem served as a constant reminder:

I represent Christ in everything I do.

In the Old Testament, God instructed His people to keep reminders of His truth in front of them at all times. “Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates” (Deuteronomy 6:8-9).

Why? Because we forget. And when we forget, we drift. We need reminders that call us back. Maybe it’s just a verse on your lock screen, a note on your desk, or something hanging in your kitchen.

Today, choose one small way to keep God before you. Place it somewhere you’ll see it throughout the day. Then let that reminder shape the way you represent Him to the people around you.
