The Gospel on Repeat

My 16-month-old grandson is obsessed with Phil Wickham’s rendition of Awesome God. He doesn’t say many recognizable words yet—but he can say “Awesome God” when he wants someone to play the song for him.

The repetition is driving us all a little crazy, but if you have to hear something multiple times a day, this song is a good one—a paean of praise to the greatness of God. It begins with creation and traces the gospel from cross to resurrection to the day He will wipe our tears away.

My grandson wants to listen to the song at all times—playing, eating, riding in the car—again and again and again. He intently watches to see who knows the words and who will sing along, delighted when he can get one of us to chime in. And when he’s frustrated or sad, the song works a miracle reset.

It’s a good reminder to me that God has given us a new song—one that He wants to be stuck in our heads and shared until others begin to listen (Psalm 40:3). The truth of the gospel and the sure hope of heaven should hum in the background of our days, dwelling richly, renewing our minds (Colossians 3:16; Romans 12:2).

“You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength...” (Psalm 8:2).
