The Gilligan Effect

What began as a ridiculous premise somehow became one of television’s most enduring shows. Gilligan’s Island always left us with a trail of unanswered questions.  Why did Ginger bring so many outfits on a three-hour tour?  Why did the Howells pack so much cash and jewelry?

But the biggest question remains: why couldn’t the Professor fix the hole in the boat?! The guy built a radio and a washing machine out of coconuts and bamboo, but he couldn’t get those folks off the island! They were busy and resourceful, but failed to address the most glaring issue.

This “Gilligan Effect” can also happen in our spiritual lives.  We can be spiritually active and well-intentioned—serving, studying, staying involved—but often neglect the obvious holes: unconfessed or habitual sin, unresolved bitterness, misplaced priorities, or a neglected walk with God.  Real spiritual growth doesn’t come from building impressive things on an island.  It comes from fixing what keeps us stranded.

As we step into 2026, let’s ask God to help us repair any “holes” we might be quietly avoiding. No amount of activity can replace the obedience that finally moves us forward.

“Let us test and examine our ways. Let us turn back to the Lord.” Lamentations 3:40
