Sinking Deeper?

Growing up in the 1970s, television taught kids to fear one thing above all else...

Quicksand!

It seemed like every series had an episode where someone was trapped in a life-and-death struggle with nature’s deadliest threat: a patch of wet sand.

I even recall reading advice in kids’ books about what to do if you got stuck in quicksand: stay calm, move slowly, don’t fight it.

Hollywood had us believe there was a patch of quicksand lurking around every corner.  And although we’ve learned that it rarely poses the danger we imagined as kids, we're still pretty good at letting our fears get ahead of the facts.

We tend to magnify our problems, imagine worst-case scenarios, and before long it feels like we're sinking deeper and deeper with no way out. In those moments, we need to remember that old quicksand advice: don't panic.

Philippians 4:6–7 says, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything… Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.”

When we bring our fears to God, we often discover they've grown far larger in our imagination than they ever were in reality. His peace guards our hearts and minds. His truth is a firm foundation beneath our feet.

Are there any “quicksand” fears in your life right now?  Today, identify one burden you've been carrying and place it in God's hands. Refuse to be pulled under by worst-case scenarios. Instead, stand on the solid ground of His promises.
