Meme or Miracle?

“Florida man headbutts shark.”

“Florida man snatches poodle from alligator’s jaws.”

If you're unfamiliar with the "Florida Man" meme, it grew out of the endless stream of news headlines involving ordinary men in Florida doing outlandish things.  Some are ridiculous.  Others are genuinely heroic.

Two recent “Florida Man” headlines caught my eye. While running errands one morning, a man saw a car plunge into a pond. He dove in and reached the trapped driver—who was pregnant—through the rear door. Her baby was safely delivered later that day.

In another incident, a man pulled over to help when he noticed the car behind him veer off the road. It turned out “help” meant leaping into a roadside canal as the vehicle sank. He saved three young children and their mother.

Just another day in Florida.

What really caught my attention, though, was that each man credited God with placing him exactly where he needed to be. They saw the rescues as divine appointments—good works prepared in advance for them to do (Ephesians 2:10).

God accomplishes extraordinary things through ordinary people. So when we stay alert to His leading, even our everyday errand-running can become miraculous interventions in the lives He wants to save.

While I’m hoping God hasn’t planned any dangerous water rescues for me today, I’m praying for a heart that’s quick to respond when He calls—trusting that He who prompts me will also equip me (Hebrews 13:21).
