Pizza Problems
Last year, my son got a job at the best pizza place in town. One of the big perks? He gets to bring home a free pizza after every shift!
At first, this seemed way too good to be true. It’s one of my favorite foods, and suddenly all this delicious, hot pizza began appearing on our counter. Thank you, Lord! But I quickly realized that even something as wonderful as free pizza can become a problem. I had to exercise moderation before it became unhealthy.
It got me thinking about temptation. James 1:14-15 says, "Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away... to sinful actions."
This may sound a little harsh when we’re talking about pizza. But James reminds us that all temptation begins with desire. Even simple, “innocent” good things—or blessings from God—can become pitfalls if they take root in the wrong place in our hearts. They can draw us astray more easily than we expect. Hebrews even notes how something as harmless as food led Esau to a “godless” choice (Hebrews 12:16).
When God blesses us, our response matters. We’re called to receive His gifts with gratitude and self-control. He’s faithful to help us enjoy these things without letting them take hold of our hearts in unhealthy ways (1 Corinthians 10:13).
Is there a blessing in your life today that might be leading toward temptation?
