From Cracks to Crown

I hate dental work.  I guess everyone does… except dentists.

Recently, while having a cracked tooth repaired, I heard mine say to her hygienist, “Oh, I just LOVE repairing a tooth!”

It occurred to me—that’s how God sees His work in me.  He delights in restoring me to the fullness He intended (Psalm 149:4).

The parallels continued as the dentist talked me through the procedure:

“First, I’m removing the broken bits.”  That’s what God does as He sanctifies us, removing what hinders our growth (John 15:2).  It’s not always pleasant, but it prevents deeper spiritual deterioration.

“Now I’m sealing the crack so there’s no chance of decay.”  His Spirit seals us and guards us (Ephesians 4:30).

“I built up a strong foundation.  Your temporary cap will work, but it’s fragile so come back if you have any problems.”  I’m rooted and built up in Christ (Colossians 2:6-7).  His grace is sufficient for me, and He’ll help in times of trouble (2 Corinthians 12:9; Psalm 46:1).

“I’m preparing a permanent crown for you. I’ll call you when it is ready.”  Need I say more?  An everlasting crown awaits us (1 Peter 5:4; James 1:12).

One more thing: while fixing my tooth was costly, the price for repairing the crack with God has been paid in full.  I need only let Him do the work (Philippians 1:6).
