Moses and Tiger Woods

While playing golf with my dad many years ago, I joked about how I'd never be as good as Tiger Woods.  My dad chuckled, then responded unexpectedly,

“Well, Tiger can’t play guitar like you can.”

It was just a simple conversation, but the thought stayed with me.  Comparing ourselves to others is unproductive.  There will always be people or circumstances that make our lives seem less impressive, causing us to overlook the unique gifts we've been given.

We’re all guilty of comparison.  Even Moses struggled with feelings of inadequacy.  Yes, Moses — the man God chose to lead Israel out of Egypt. When God called him to confront Pharaoh, he responded:

“I’m not very good with words.” (Exodus 4:10)

But Acts 7:22 tells us Moses was “powerful in both speech and action.”  So why did Moses think otherwise? He must have been comparing himself to someone he viewed as more eloquent. In doing so, he allowed his insecurities to get in the way of God’s plan.

The same can be true for us.  Comparison is like telling God we’re dissatisfied with the way He made us.  But Romans 12:6 says, “In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well.”

God never asked Moses to be someone else.  He simply asked him to be faithful.

Today, instead of comparing yourself to others, thank God for the gifts He's given you — and use them faithfully for His glory.
