More Than Enough in His Hands

Jesus looks out over a hungry crowd in a desolate place. The people are needy and tired. There’s no food in sight. In compassion, Jesus tells his disciples to feed them (Mark 8:1–8).

The disciples see the same crowd and the same needs—but through very different eyes. They focus on what they lack: “How are we supposed to find enough food to feed them out here in the wilderness?” (Mark 8:4). Their sense of inadequacy blinds them to Jesus’ power.

But Jesus doesn’t focus on what the disciples don’t have. He simply asks them what they do have. The seven loaves they offer—nothing impressive for thousands of people—becomes more than enough in His hands.

The world is starving for Jesus’ love and God’s truth. I’m overwhelmed by how remote and desolate the spiritual landscape feels and by my own inadequacy. But Jesus isn’t asking me, His modern-day disciple, to focus on what I lack. He’s inviting me to bring what little I do have and place it in His hands. He will then multiply it in ways beyond what I ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20).

“And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:8).
