Memories That Start the Season
When Memorial Day hits our seaside vacation town, it’s like someone flips a switch. The beaches come to life as tourists pour in like the rising tide. Music drifts through the air, and fireworks fill the night sky. Just like that, summer is here.
For most people, Memorial Day weekend feels like a relaxing celebration. And in many ways, it is.
But it’s also a time to pause and remember.
Behind every backyard cookout and sun-soaked beach day are memories of men and women who gave their lives defending freedoms we often take for granted. We owe them more than a long weekend. Jesus said, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13).
Those words point us to an even greater sacrifice. Christ willingly laid down His life to secure freedom for us: freedom from sin, shame, and death itself (Romans 5:8; Galatians 5:1). The cross reminds us that our deepest freedoms were purchased at an unimaginable cost (1 Corinthians 6:20; 1 Peter 1:18-19).
So welcome the season with family and savor the simple gifts of summer. But somewhere between the festivals and fireworks, remember those who gave their lives for earthly freedom — and give thanks to the Savior who gave everything for eternal freedom.
Be grateful today. It was paid for. Twice.
