Let There Be Light

It only took a few swings of the sledgehammer to realize our “simple” kitchen remodel was about to become a much bigger project.  Hidden inside the wall was a tangle of electrical wiring that had to be cut and rerouted.

For the next week or so, we cooked dinner and cleaned dishes by the glow of a few dim lamps scattered around the kitchen. When the electrician finally flipped the new switch and the room flooded with light, it felt like a miracle.

It made me think of the very first words God spoke in Scripture: "Let there be light" (Genesis 1:3).

What’s especially striking about this verse is that God created light before He created the sun or moon.  The first light existed because He spoke it into being — not because of any physical source.  It appeared simply because God commanded it.

Centuries after Genesis, Jesus made another astonishing declaration: “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12).  The One who spoke light into existence stepped into His creation to bring spiritual light to those walking in darkness.

When life grows dim, when sin clouds our vision, or when fear leaves us stumbling in the dark, Christ remains the answer.  He doesn't merely point us toward the light — He is the Light.

“The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”  (John 1:4–5)
