He Took the Wheel
Highway traffic had been stop-and-go for miles. Every driver was on edge... and then some hotshot in a street racer decided to make things worse. He darted in and out, cutting people off at every opportunity. His thundering subwoofer and buzzsaw muffler only added to everyone’s irritation. Finally, he swerved into the emergency lane and roared away at 60 mph. Good riddance.
Ten minutes later, as the line of traffic inched forward, that car came back into view — this time, pulled over on the shoulder with police lights flashing behind it. As traffic crept past, no one felt sorry for him. In fact, most people honked and offered a sarcastic wave.
Later I thought about that driver as everyone looked on. Would anyone willingly let him off the hook after witnessing his behavior? Would someone offer to pay his fine instead of reveling in his downfall? What kind of person would take his place in the driver’s seat — enduring all the ridicule and shame?
Jesus would. He did. He does. He willingly took our place at Calvary, and He continues to intercede for us each and every day.
Philippians 2:7-8 says, “He gave up His divine privileges; He took the humble position of a slave… and died a criminal’s death on a cross.”
We’ve all been that driver in various ways in our lives. As we prepare for Easter, let’s praise the One who took our place and didn’t just pass by.
