God is Working. Am I Watching?
About fifty years ago, my parents took our family to Dinosaur National Monument. I still remember being in awe of the massive dinosaur bones. And if you knew my dad, you’d know he was like a kid in a candy shop.
Excavation ended at the Monument in 1924. But last fall, workers accidentally unearthed another 3,000 fossilized dinosaur bones while improving a parking lot! Ironically, park visitors have been tramping over an archaeological treasure trove for 100 years, on their way to look at old news.
Sometimes we do the same thing spiritually, don’t we? We look back at high points and wonder why God isn’t “doing more” today. When the foundation of the second temple was laid, many “wept aloud” because it didn’t compare to the old glory days (Ezra 3:12). Focusing on the past, they didn’t appreciate what God was building before their very eyes.
Jesus assures us, “My Father is always working, and so am I” (John 5:17). The problem isn't that God has gone quiet — it’s that we aren't expecting Him to work. Like the drowsy disciples in Gethsemane, Jesus asks us, “Are you asleep? Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour?” (Mark 14:37).
Lord, please open my eyes today. Help me recognize what You are doing right here, right now.
“For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it?” (Isaiah 43:19).
