Forecast: Ready

More than half the U.S. spent last week watching the weather, waiting for the massive winter storm. We refreshed forecasts, scanned radar maps, bought supplies, rearranged plans, and kept our devices charged. Expectation changed how we lived for several days.

Jesus told us to live in ready expectation of His return. When I stop to think about all the instructions He left for us, I realize a surprising number are about living a life of waiting and watching.

Again and again, He returns to the theme of readiness: a bridesmaid prepared to celebrate, a servant keeping the lamps lit, a gatekeeper staying awake, a steward faithfully managing the house while the boss is away (Matthew 24:42-25:30; Luke 12:35-48).

Jesus warns us not to be dulled by the pleasures we pursue or the worries we face in our temporary life of waiting (Luke 21:34-36).

Anticipating the snowstorm was far from passive. We sprang into action. In the same way, watching for Christ’s return should lift my eyes from my routines and reorder my priorities. So I ask myself, what should I do today? How shall I keep the lamp lit? What resources could I steward more faithfully? Are my family and friends prepared? How can I be more eager and alert?

“Look, I am coming soon!” (Revelation 22:12).
