Check Your Inbox

My mom was always worried about digital theft.  She never simplified her life with any “autopay” bill services because she was concerned about sharing her bank details online.  And spam emails?  They sent her into a mild panic — especially the ones claiming, “Your bank account is at risk!”

I’d check them for her, show her that the email address was fake or suspicious, and we’d delete them.  Still, she never quite got used to it.

Watching her sort through those fake alerts reminded me that we face a similar challenge every day as Christians.  Not all messages that land in our hearts and minds are trustworthy.  1 John 4:1 warns us: “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

In a culture overflowing with misinformation and deceptive ideas, it’s hard not to be swayed by what looks or sounds convincing.  Godly discernment isn’t optional today — it’s essential.  Like a spiritual spam filter, it helps us quickly determine what is true and life-giving, while rejecting what is harmful or misleading.

Is there an area where you're struggling to discern truth from deception? Ask God to sharpen your spiritual insight, and seek wisdom from trusted believers.

Just because a message arrives doesn't mean it deserves a place in your heart.
