Behind the Front Lines

Not long ago, I passed an impressive military convoy on the highway.  There were dozens of armored Humvees and trucks with massive, mud-caked wheels and camouflage paint.  They hauled trailers loaded with missiles and heavy artillery.

Then I spotted one truck in the group that didn’t quite fit in.  It was just a plain olive-drab pickup pulling a small trailer.  I actually felt bad for the soldier behind the wheel.  Out of all the cool trucks, he got that one?!  Poor guy. Probably his first assignment.

But as I got closer, I saw a sign on the trailer: “Potable Water.”

Suddenly, that little rig wasn’t so insignificant anymore.

The other trucks may have looked important. But on the battlefield, even the most powerful weapons are useless if the soldiers can’t function. Firepower can’t compensate for dehydration.

1 Corinthians 12:22 puts it plainly: “Some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary.”

Every component in the “convoy of Christ” has a unique and vital role in the mission.  Not everyone serves on the front lines.  The Sunday School teachers, the sound techs, the nursery attendants, the clean-up crew — they’re the water trailers. Not flashy. But remove them, and something essential is lost.

God doesn't call us to be awe-inspiring.  He calls us to be faithful.  Serve where you are, with what you've been given.  Your contribution matters more than you know.
