What Comes Back to Us
I was walking through Walmart one evening, just before closing time. It was obvious the late-night restocking crew gets to turn the music up a little louder than the day shift. Suddenly a great 80’s classic came on over the speakers — one of those songs everyone knows.
For the next several minutes, literally every shopper and employee I passed was humming or quietly singing along. No one was reading lyrics. No one was struggling to remember the tune. They’d learned it so well years ago. The words and melody were ready to surface anytime they heard it again.
It made me think about what we store in our hearts and minds. The things we repeatedly hear, watch, and read don't simply disappear. They settle deep within us. That's one reason Scripture urges us to fill ourselves with God's Word.
Psalm 119:11 says, "I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you" (ESV).
When God's truth has been planted deeply, the Holy Spirit often brings it back at exactly the right moment — a verse when we’re tempted, a promise during a trial, or a reminder of God's character when fear begins to take over.
What am I storing in my heart today that will come back to me in the future?
