The First Bite of Forever

When I was younger, my family never went out to restaurants or ordered in.  It wasn’t until I was 12 years old that I tasted real pizza.  Not the frozen kind or the cafeteria version, but true deep-dish pizza from a legendary Chicago pizzeria.  All I could think was, “Wait... this is what pizza is supposed to taste like?!”  Everything suddenly seemed new and alive.

In a way, that first bite also changed how I think about Heaven.

Over the years I’ve heard people wonder if eternity in Heaven will get boring.  I guess they picture an endless existence of clouds and harps.  But I imagine Heaven as feeling like an eternal “first bite” moment:

Your first glimpse of the Grand Canyon that absolutely took your breath away...

That elation just after the final buzzer when your team won the championship...

The moment the doctor placed your newborn child into your arms...

Imagine earthly time freezing at the height of awe and excitement — the emotion of that single breathtaking instant stretching into forever.  Every sight, sound, and taste overflowing with the unfiltered goodness of God.

1 Corinthians 2:9 tells us, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.”

Praise the Lord, Heaven will never lose its flavor.  It may just feel like the first bite, forever.
