The Finisher

I’m not good at finishing. I love planning projects, but my enthusiasm fades in the slow slog to the end.

I once crocheted hundreds of granny hexagons to re-create an afghan I saw in a catalog. The hexagons have been done for years, but sewing them together is no fun, so the project stalled.

Then there’s the paint I bought in 2020 to redo our interior trim. I spent hours finding the perfect color match, but I never got around to actually painting. Truthfully, there are dozens of unfinished “great ideas” around my house.

Maybe it was the nagging thought of those unfinished projects that made the word “finisher” jump off the page when I recently read: “Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2, NKJV). Thankfully, unlike me, Jesus always finishes what He starts.

Not only is the work necessary for my salvation finished (John 19:30), but my sanctification is also assured. It’s almost as if Paul knew he was writing to generations of us who leave things undone when he promised, “God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished” (Philippians 1:6). Even our future inheritance is already secured, “kept in heaven” for us (1 Peter 1:4).

I hadn’t realized before how precious is the truth that Jesus is the Finisher. From now on, I think I’ll let my own weakness as a finisher remind me of His strength.
