I was thinking about David today — crouching beside a stream and choosing five smooth stones. 

I wondered what was going through his mind at that moment.

Earlier that day, he had eagerly jumped at the chance to fight Goliath (1 Samuel 17:32).  But now the rush of the moment had given way to reality.  Goliath was waiting. 

I wondered if David had a “What did I get myself into?” moment.

We’ve all been there in some way.  We get caught up in a surge of spiritual enthusiasm and make a commitment:  I'll teach Sunday school.  I'll volunteer for that ministry.  I'll have that difficult conversation I've been avoiding. But a few days later, the excitement wears off and reality sets in.  What was I thinking?

So I went back and read 1 Samuel 17 again, looking for any indication that David's confidence or enthusiasm faded as the fight drew near.

I found the opposite.

David shouted to Goliath, “Today the LORD will conquer you” (v. 46).  And as Goliath moved in, “David quickly ran out to meet him” (v. 48).

He ran toward the commitment he had made.

Thankfully, most of our commitments don't involve facing a nine-foot warrior.  But sometimes following through can still seem like a battle.

Today, don’t let yesterday’s enthusiasm become today’s hesitation.  Be like David.  Run toward what God has called you to do.
