Marks of Faith?
There are question marks in the margins of my Bible. While other people may jot down amazing insights, I leave a “?” beside verses I don’t understand. Sure, there are times when I dig in and study, but there are also many times I just mark the question and move on. I’ve learned that understanding is not something I unlock through effort; it is something I receive. And sometimes it takes time.
When I return later—sometimes months or even years later—I pause over those question marks and wonder why they are there. God’s meaning now feels obvious. The words haven’t changed, but I have. The Spirit has been at work, illuminating what once lay beyond my grasp.
Jesus promised this kind of help: “The Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything” (John 14:26). Scripture also reminds us, “We have received God’s Spirit…so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us” (1 Corinthians 2:12).
Those old question marks are humbling, testifying to my limits. But they are also reassuring, marking God’s faithfulness to continue His work in me. So I read on with confidence and gratitude, trusting that He will guide me into truth.
“Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths…” (Psalm 119:18).
