Is the Sign Correct?
They got me. I fell for it. I was walking through an outlet mall when a big, bold sign lured me into a store:
“MEGA-CLEARANCE SALE — 70% OFF EVERYTHING!”
Awesome! I took a look around and picked something out. When the cashier rang it up, I said, “Hmmm, that’s not 70% off.”
“Oh,” she replied sheepishly, “the sign says up to 70% off.”
I looked back at the sign, and sure enough, those two little words were hidden in the tiniest print possible.
I walked away, unimpressed by their little marketing trick. But sometimes Christians are guilty of misleading advertising too. The sign on our door may advertise faithfulness, love, and humility. Yet there may be some fine print we’re hoping nobody notices. When words and actions don’t align, our message breaks down. People may be turned off by what they see.
Jesus calls us to a genuine faith — one that’s the same in public and in private. 1 John 3:18 says, “Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.”
God isn’t asking us to look perfect; He’s asking us to live honestly. Today, let your life be an honest advertisement for the faith you profess.
