He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands

A headline I read last week said:

Physicists discover that gluons—glue-like particles—help keep visible matter stable.

OK, I’m not even going to pretend to understand what a gluon is.  And at the end of the day, I realize I don’t care.  Because I already know what ultimately keeps visible matter stable.  The Bible tells us plainly: Christ “holds all creation together” (Colossians 1:17).

So, yes, Christ may use the gluons He created—and probably other mechanisms scientists haven’t discovered yet—to hold things together. But beneath the scientific explanation is a greater reality: “He sustains everything by the mighty power of His command” (Hebrews 1:3). It’s in Him that we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28).

People may think I have my head in the sand, but I’m trying to keep it in the heavens—picturing an almighty God, arms stretched wide, nothing beyond His reach, holding all creation in balance until the day He fully restores it (Romans 8:21; Revelation 21:5).

As Christ’s followers, “we live by believing and not by seeing” (2 Corinthians 5:7). So today, I will set my “sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand” (Colossians 3:1), and not worry about the gluons.
