Heat Shield
Last week we heard a lot about heat shields as Artemis II splashed down. (Our family watched with particular interest because my dad worked on the design of the original Apollo heat shields before entering full-time ministry.)
The commentators reminded us repeatedly: the heat shield is meticulously designed to protect the crew from temperatures up to 5,000 degrees during re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere. Astronauts can see the fiery glow through the capsule windows. That coverage gave us a glimpse of what it might be like to hurtle through space at risk of being consumed—a terrifying thought.
This got me thinking about the “shield of faith” that Scripture says extinguishes the even more dangerous fiery darts of the Enemy (Ephesians 6:16). As Satan hurls doubts, fears, and temptations, we pick up and hold out what we know is true: God is in charge, He is for us, He loves us, and all His promises will stand.
This is the protection He offers His children as we complete our journey. Nothing happens that He has not foreseen—and He has designed all the protection we need.
“For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith” (1 John 5:4).
