Football Family

My daughter’s friend married the younger brother of an NFL quarterback. Before they met, she knew nothing about football and had never watched an NFL game. She didn’t even recognize the famous last name when she went on their first date. But a few years later, she married into the VIP world of hard-to-get tickets, box seats at NFL games, and personal access to a famous quarterback that thousands of diehard fans could only dream about.

The funny thing is, she didn’t earn any of those privileges through her football prowess. It’s all because she was accepted into the family.

In the same way, we’ve been blessed “with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms.” Not because of anything we’ve done, but “because we are united with Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). Simply by accepting His offer, we now belong to the family (Ephesians 2:19). We have an all-access pass to the Father (Ephesians 3:12), and an inheritance kept secure in heaven (1 Peter 1:3-5).

We saw my daughter’s friend on TV cheering in the stands at her first NFL game. She texted to say football was way more fun than she thought. She was just beginning to discover what being part of the family meant.

It makes me wonder how much of what I have in Christ I have yet to appreciate. (And who I will text to say how great it is!)
