Eyes in the Sky

There's an unusual sign posted on a rural road near my house. It reads:

"SPEED LIMIT ENFORCED BY AIRCRAFT"

I don't know why this sign was put up, but after living here for 30 years, I can assure you of one thing:  no aircraft are monitoring this quiet country lane! In fact, the speed limit isn’t really enforced by anyone.

That doesn’t mean drivers are free to go 100 mph.  Even if they avoid a ticket, it’s still reckless and against the law.

In a spiritual sense, there are times when Christians treat God’s Word like a speed limit sign — testing its boundaries or ignoring it altogether.  Because of God’s grace, we sometimes act like His commands are merely suggestions, or live as though Scripture’s warnings are exaggerated.

But Scripture tells a different story. Hebrews 4:13 says, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.”

God isn’t a traffic judge waiting to hammer us when we do wrong, but His presence isn’t imaginary either. His loving and gracious regard remains unwavering, and we’re ultimately accountable to live by His Word — even when disobedience seems to carry no immediate consequences.

Do we live differently when we think no one is watching?  Today, let our choices reflect the truth that God sees everything and calls us to faithful integrity.
