Daily Drenching
I walk in my neighborhood almost every morning. I know who waters their lawn, how often, and even what days of the week they water. But during this week’s heat wave, I notice everyone is running their sprinklers every morning. It’s a desperate attempt to keep the grass from withering and the flowers from fading when the heat sets in.
The spiritual picture is hard to miss. When we soak ourselves in God’s Word, when we drench ourselves in His presence early, we’re prepared for the day’s inevitable hot spots.
Scripture so frequently uses water to illustrate how God sustains us spiritually:
Blessed are those who trust in the Lord
and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.
They are like trees planted along a riverbank,
with roots that reach deep into the water.
Such trees are not bothered by the heat
or worried by long months of drought.
Their leaves stay green,
and they never stop producing fruit.
(Jeremiah 17:7-8)
Psalm 1:1-3 uses the same well-watered tree imagery to describe those who delight in God’s Word. The Word is likened to rain in Isaiah 55:10-11. And, of course, Jesus said the water He gives becomes a “fresh, bubbling spring within” us. We need never thirst again (John 4:13-14).
So today, let’s drink deeply of Him before the heat rises.
