Choosing Refuge

I live on a little lake. The view from my back deck is picturesque, but at this time of year, a sharp wind blows off the water almost constantly. The sun may be shining, but that wind is bitter. So I sit out front, where the L-shape of the house shields me from the chilly gusts. I’m left with just a view of the driveway and street beyond—but I’m warm and content.

People probably drive by and think it’s strange to see someone sitting on the front stoop looking at the road when there’s a beautiful lake behind the house. But I don’t mind. I know what stepping out of my sheltered nook this time of year would expose me to.

It reminds me that our refuge in Jesus may seem strange to people who don’t know Him. There are things in the world that appear beautiful and inviting but leave the soul cold. In contrast, “those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest…” (Psalm 91:1). A day in His courts is better than a thousand elsewhere (Psalm 84:10).

Faith is choosing God’s shelter over the world’s scenery. It means remaining in the place of prayer, obedience, and closeness to Christ—even when others don’t understand or think we’re missing out on something better. That is where warmth, peace, and rest are found.
