Lost Without a Cell Phone
A gentle rain had been falling for hours. I stepped outside and scurried to my car… hands full, fumbling for my keys, trying to keep my stuff dry. Then the unthinkable happened: my phone slipped from my grasp. I watched in horror as it plunged, end-over-end, and splashed unceremoniously into a murky pool on the asphalt.
I dropped everything and snatched it up from the depths. A dull, off-color glow flickered, and then all went black. My once bright and sharp screen now displayed nothing but a dark reflection of the cloudy sky above.
Despair.
People who know me will tell you I’m not a cell phone addict. I’m not big on social media, I’m not a gamer, and there are no apps that I depend on to get through my day. Honestly, I don’t even really like looking at my phone most of the time. So the level of anxiety I felt at that moment caught me waaay off guard. I conquered 45 years of life without an iPhone, but for some reason the thought of being without one for a few days seemed unexplainably daunting.
Maybe it was partly visions of dollar signs and replacement costs. Or maybe I had subconsciously accepted the universal cell phone protocol of being on constant standby for any chinwag sent my way.
Whatever the case, would it be a stretch to say most of us feel a bit lost without our cell phones? It’s like thinking we’re not controlled by WiFi… until the modem dies or the power goes out for a few hours.
Luke 12:34 tells us that the things we treasure are what define us. This would include our possessions, our habits, how we spend our time... etc. These are the things that capture our hearts. Would our phones fall into any of these categories? What are your treasures?
Ironically, we may have gotten into the habit of thinking that our spirituality is not affected by our habits, or all the “acceptable addictions” that distract us from more Godly things. But if the things we treasure don’t spiritually engage our hearts and minds, they’ll never touch our souls.
Luke 12:34 - “Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”
