1. These cities were judged for their wickedness, and their destruction came about suddenly and completely. These cities have never been rebuilt.

2. Lot asked the angels to let him live in a small city named Zoar. It was evident that Lot was attracted to the materialistic things a city could give to him. He selfishly chose the city over obedience to the word of God.

3. His problems started with his selfish choice (Genesis 13:11), and they intensified when he moved toward Sodom. It wasn’t long before he moved into the city itself, again for selfish reasons. Even his thinking became distorted. Finally, he lost everything, but rather than move back with faithful Abraham, he became a cave dweller. Lot’s willpower, moral standards, and integrity were so damaged that he didn’t even realize he was having an incestuous relationship with his daughters.

4. Sodom is a picture of the world under judgment.

5. His daughters were pulled into Lot’s downward moral path, becoming brainwashed in the things of the world. Lot’s descendants, the Moabites and the Ammonites, were the result of his incestuous relationship with his daughters, and they were enemies of God’s people for years, later causing Israel to commit the sins of idolatry and immorality.

2. Jesus prayed that His disciples would not be taken out of the world, that they would be in it but not of it (John 17). Lot was not only in Sodom, but he was part of Sodom. What is your experience of being “of” the world? Its effects?
