Background

The seeds of Growing Christians Ministries, Inc. were planted in 1971, when Dave Reid began to write devotional articles for a weekly Young Life newsletter in Cincinnati, Ohio. Two years later Dr. Dave, a research scientist and engineer, his wife Margie, and their three children (Catherine, David and Ron) moved to the Boston area where Dave began studies at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. In order to keep in touch with the teens from their Young Life group in Cincinnati, they decided to mail Dave's one-page devotional articles with some Reid family news on a second page.

Thus "Devotions for Growing Christians" was born, and continues today with the same basic format -- a one-page (two sides) devotional essay on a wide variety of Scriptures and subjects, with real-life practical applications from the Bible passages. In September 1973, when Dave wrote the first "official issue" of "DFGC," it was mailed to about 100 teens, but the mailing list has grown to over 5000 people. eDevotions for Growing Christians is sent out about 5 times a year to people around the world.

The Reid family has grown, too. The three Reid children are married, and the family news page now includes grandchildren! Catherine and her husband, Kirk, live in New Jersey and have two children, Callie and Connor. David and his wife Kari live in Illinois and have two daughters, Ingrid and Kirsten. Ron and his wife Erica live in Rhode Island and have two sons, Jonathan and David. Ron is vitally involved in the GCM ministry. He does all the time-consuming work of editing Dave's talks to the proper length for radio, does all the duplication work for the "Talks" on CD and MP3, takes orders, does all the shipping, answers many of the emails, and more.

Since 1973, Growing Christians Ministries Inc. has expanded to include "Devotions for Growing Christians," "Talks for Growing Christians," "Courses for Growing Christians," "Vacations for Growing Christians," and even "Music for Growing Christians." Further explanation and materials available from these branches of GCM are included on this website. God has truly blessed Growing Christians Ministries. We give Him all the glory and we praise Him for the way He has guided us and directed the expansion of this ministry, as well as the way He has faithfully provided for the needs of the ministry through His people. All the materials available at our Online Store are sold below cost, and "Devotions for Growing Christians" is free of charge.

Growing Christians Ministries is a non-profit ministry, registered with the United States government. All gifts are tax-deductible and receipts for gifts are mailed promptly. Dr. Dave and Margie Reid do not derive any financial benefit, salary or remuneration from any part of Growing Christians Ministries.

Doctrinal Statement:

• The Bible is inspired of God, inerrant in the original documents and of final authority in all matters of faith and practice.
• There is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
• The eternal Son became Man when He was born of a virgin, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit. The Lord Jesus Christ is thus fully God and fully Man forever.
• In His earthly life, Jesus was sinlessly perfect. His sacrifice for sin on the cross was substitutionary and representative. He arose bodily from the dead and ascended into heaven where He now ministers as our High Priest. He will come for his Church and return with His saints to reign over this earth.
• Each member of the human race is fallen, sinful, and lost, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for the salvation of any person. Redemption is wholly by the blood of Christ, and salvation is by grace, through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
• Every child of God possesses eternal life and, being sealed with the Holy Spirit, is safe and secure for all eternity.
• The Holy Spirit indwells the believer, who is thus empowered to live a godly life.
• There will be a resurrection of the saved and of the lost, the saved unto eternal life, and the lost unto eternal and conscious judgment.
• The Church began with the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and is composed of all true believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. These believers are united to Him and to one another by the indwelling Holy Spirit. The Church's chief function is to glorify God as the body and bride of Christ and to witness for her Lord until His return.
